Coverage
These recommendations cover Diagnosis, Staging and Risk Assessment, Treatment of both localised and metastatic disease and follow-up.
With respect to treatment, examples of the recommendations include:
- For localised prostate cancer (T1-4NXM0) – treatment options include watchful waiting, radical prostatectomy, brachytherapy, external beam radiotherapy and anti-androgen therapy. Patients should be informed of the potential benefits and harms of the different treatment options before a final decision is taken.
- In intermediate or high risk or locally advanced (T2-T4) prostate cancer - androgen suppression before and during external beam radiotherapy or following it significantly improves local control, reduces disease progression and improves overall survival.
- For metastatic prostate cancer – medical castration with LHRH analogues should be accompanied with an anti-androgen for 4 weeks.
